A lot of people who have communicated interest in working with me on this blog are people who know my friends personally and have been pointed toward me by those who I’m comfortable with face-to-face. Very few people here just know me “through Tumblr,” which is nice, because I’m not super fond of juggling different types of interaction.

I’m absolutely fine with setting up appointments with people I know through X degrees of separation via Tumblr or e-mail. I like doing it, and, in fact, I prefer it.

Maybe your accidental consumption of a sacred substance and the brief, situationally-appropriate chaos that followed your mistake represents the potential for the subject of that reading to accidentally influence you negatively on an astronomical level - or maybe even a subconscious one, seeing as you seem concerned enough with the events of that isolated spiritual SNAFU that you might blow the effects of any resulting “bad luck” way out of proportion.

Fearing that a certain fox would steal all the necro-thunder, the scattered remains of a young roe deer waited patiently until our second visit to Chanterelle Fox’s Hedge to be found. Two skull fragments, a shoulder blade, part of the pelvis, a leg bone or two and several broken portions of jaw (with teeth) made up the tiny harvest of bones.

Feeling like you have to have a patron deity.

Oh geez, this argument. Drove me NUTS when I was attempting a full-out reconstructionist approach. This is what I learned:

It’s okay if you DON’T have a patron. Don’t feel pressured to have one, because not everyone does AND THAT’S OKAY.

For all people interested in attempting at least some level of reconstructionism: historically, one’s patron was tied to their job. Theoretically, as a teacher, my patron(s) should be Apollon (as Theos tied to education), Athene (as Theos tied to wisdom), and, almost as an afterthought, Hermes (as Theos tied to language, since I’m a Latin teacher). Plus any relevant Mousai (of which there are many, depending on the lesson plan). Same for Husband, who is the other half of the Latin department where I work.

My parents, on the other hand, run a packaging and shipping business. Their patron would by far be Hermes, as Theos of commerce, communication, travel, and middlemen.

As homemaker and social networker, Hestia would likely be my mother-in-law’s patron. So would Zeus (Xenios) any Theos associated with charity work or civic administration, since she volunteers for several local non-for-profits. My father-in-law, as a former Naval engineer, would have Poseidon, Ares, Apollon, and Hephaistos as patrons. (Perhaps with less Arean and more Apollonian influence, since he works for DARPA now.)

The point is that if you have a job (be it a paid job, a volunteer position, or being a student), you have a Theos that it is right to honor if you follow a Hellenic/Hellenistic tradition. (And many other pagan paths, for that matter.)

If you DID get a call from one or more of the Theoi, regardless of whether that Theos’ influence touches on what your life involves or not, follow up on it. Honor that deity, either traditionally or not as you see fit, but do it. Don’t assume that deity is your patron…but at the same time, different Theoi call to different people at different times.

Do what you do. You’ll make mistakes, and the Theoi are okay with that. REALLY. Otherwise I would have been a pile of ash in a thunderstorm a long time ago. But be willing to own (and own up to) your mistakes. They don’t seem to like wishy-washyness or laziness, and expect you to do your fair share of work and research, but wouldn’t you feel the same way about someone who wanted to be connected to you in some way? Sooner or later, what you feel will either make sense or be revealed as fiction.

I might as well introduce myself like this.
My name is Jason, and I’m a seventeen-year-old spiritualist originally from Manhattan and the islands of Greece. I speak English and French. and can communicate in Greek if I’m given space to remember the language as I was taught it when I was younger.
